Anticipation

Sunday - Coffee and Cake
weekly mommy babble and handmade goings on...

Blog's 'Second Giveaway' winner! Congratulations to "amber01sw". You have won yourself a custom made adorable flower headband! I will contact you shortly :)

Anticipation... . I'm writing before the day begins as it is Halloween and I know my day is going to be full of cooking, little monsters and roaring (that'll be me... lol). Last year we had a blast dressing up and having fun with some friends of ours. For my son it was his very first experience of acknowledging the whole commercial side to Halloween. Well he's extremely prepared this time around! He decided I think about 4 months ago that he was going to be a vampire and still hasn't let up on that idea! Unfortunately though I swear I have NOT been able to get any vampire teeth anywhere for him. I searched Toys R Us, my local craft shop that has a HUGE amount of halloween dress up stuff, and even my supermarket which stocked and even larger amount of stuff including costumes... but teeth? I was out of luck! I mean vampire outfits without teeth? Perhaps I didn't look hard enough lol. I was limited with the stores I could visit in the retail park, but I hoped the supermarket would pay off being as they have already stripped many small businesses in the UK bare... all without vampire teeth! My son made an awesome Darth Maul earlier in the week when my partner had a dabble at painting his face. We have a lightsaber at least lol! But vampire it is for today!

So I'm just going to have to paint them on for him which is ok... I'm excited anyway, as it's nice that my son is starting to look forward to these things now! I've already done my pumpkin, and baked a pumpkin and pecan pie... trying really hard not to devour it before later lol! I can't wait to photograph some of the dishes i have planned.

Nothing new has happened with me this week other than anticipating happenings next week, completing orders and finishing my son's Sooty puppet which is a Christmas present for him... just need to make Sweep and Soo next. Stuff has been happening with my little girl though, who is now finally sitting confidently on her own, purposefully batting things with her plastic hammer and grabbing like crazy lol! I wish I could keep up with her, she's just going a bit too quickly for me at the mo! It's amazing how much you take on board with the first and how it all just flies by with the second. I'm really chuffed for her though I have been able to tell for ages that she's been desperate to play with her big brother and now she can! Great stuff :)

Right! Bed Time! Take care :)

Jarg0n Knitting and Crochet Geekery

Friday Finds... jarg0n

Interview # 49
I absolutely love to knit and crochet as you've probably guessed before and am totally besotted with anything that is remotely cute and geeky. I have always been like that in many ways, and was pretty well known in my teenage years for being the one that still thought cartoons were cool (still do.... ahem). Nowadays I am very much inspired by my kids, amigurumi styling and my inner "girl" (I'm a bit of a tomboy nowadays).

Jarg0n on Etsy is an artist that I feel an affinity with in this respect as their work reminds me of a child-like mentality, and the ability to enjoy creations without formality! The work is super cute, fun and bright and I am really pleased that I can share this fab interview with you today :)

(Just click the images to go direct to the listings)

-- Tell me a bit about you! (Name, Age, Location, and give us a random fact whilst you're at it.) My name is Dawn or D4wn1e, I'm 41 years old and live in Rotherham UK with my partner Mick, son Jack and two cats Beta and Pixel. I grew up in a deprived area of England and was heavily into the punk scene while I was growing up. I spent much of my free time back then going to jumble sales and charity shops to buy clothing that I could redesign. I once stole the cricket net and Blackout curtains from school to make a skirt.

-- What is your business about then? Revisiting old skills that I've had an absolute passion for when I was younger. Arts and crafts were always my thing but before I knew it years had flown by and I had spent the time fitting in and being a responsible member of society (House, job, child, relationship). My son often tells me I should do more things that I really enjoy, so I guess my business is about that, rekindling old passions :)

-- How did Etsy come into your life? I had started creating craft items to sell for a charity and raised a decent sum of money. Mick told me about etsy and suggested I should open a shop and see what happens. I was suprised how cheap etsy was to list so thought what the hell.

-- Are you working a day job too? Not a conventional job but for the last two years I have been home educating my son who has Asperger's syndrome and social anxiety disorder due to extreme bullying at school. Although I don't work a regular 9 till 5 job I do put in a lot more hours but it means I can be flexible which works perfectly for the running of my etsy store.

-- How long has the artist in you been 'unleashed' for? The artist me has always been there, she's just been hiding while the other me's were doing the regular stuff. I was taught knitting, embroidery and lots of other crafts from a very early age by my mother who coincidently creates all the crochet items in my shop. My shop has been open for two months now and the artistic me is back with a vengeance!

-- What has been the inspiration behind your business? Mick and Jack are the inspiration for my business. As an artist I find myself very critical of my own work as I imagine a lot of other artists are. The boys give me the confidence to say "Hey my work's good enough to be out there!"

-- If you could describe your products in three words, what would you tell me? Unique, cute and geeky.

-- What would an average working day for you be like from dawn til dusk? Sometimes I get up with Mick when he's getting up for work about 5am, after a cup of tea and a check of my shop I can get a couple of hours crafting in before I wake Jack. The rest of the day is cooking meals, sorting Jack with school work, cleaning, washing, making lots of phone calls and arranging meetings for Jacks ongoing therapy and education. When Mick gets home from work and school, dinner and washing up are done I catch up with my shop and blog, taking and editing photographs, writing item descriptions and gaining publicity on various internet forums, this takes me to 9pm when I will wind down for the evening in front of the tv with a glass of wine but even then I will be crafting.

-- What's your favourite material and techniques to work with? I really love knitting and have recently tried hand felting for the first time which I absolutely love, I'm really proud of my traditional shrunken head bag as I have never seen the technique of tacking in the features pre felting done before and then hand felting the bag and having the features appear in 3D just as I imagined they would look. I should probably point out here for those that don't felt that the pre felted item is a lot bigger than the felted item and so getting the features to appear as they should is kind of tricky.

-- What is your ideal vision for the future for you and your work? My ideal vision for my work is that People enjoy my creations and hopefully I build up a customer base so that my sales increase, I would love for Mick to go part time and be able to spend more time at home.

-- Away from work, what do you like to do for fun or to wind down? I love to game, especially co-op gaming, Micks the family techie so we have a big gaming network at home . We like to kill virtual zombies together (left 4 Dead). We also love to cook and experiment with recipes, we hot and cold smoke food and make our own cheese and of course tv and a glass of wine :)

-- What are you likely to search for on Etsy? Unique one of a kind items with possibly a gothic/horror twist.

-- Any last words? Do what you have a passion for, do it well but most of all enjoy it.

Arm Candy For You!

Tuesday - BESTeam Mosaic
weekly shoutout to the dedicated workers that like to help other handmade artists...

Armcandyforyou on Etsy... I think if i wear to get hooked on bags at first glance then someone would only need to show me a store like Arm Candy For You to begin an obsession! Oh wow! I think the thing that I just LOVE about the designs are the vintage feel of quite a few of the pieces, and the abstraction of others. And then there's the choice of materials, some of which rekindle memories of my childhood just by looking at them. I have already been hearting away at a few bits and bobs and will likely buy these for Christmas gifts this year, although sadly I won't be able to get one for me due to having to dedicate funds on projects (sad face)... Although I could bat my eyelashes at the other half... Like that works anymore LOL!

I think on any occassion these bags and clutches will look amazing and go incredibly well with retro fashion, a vintage look and most definitely a classy look for the perfect evening out. They are just stunning! Make sure you check out the store as the prices are pretty good and each bag is made to order so you'll always be in mind when your bag is being made :D

Armcandyforyou's Blog... is great if you'd like to find out more about projects and goings on of the store. Check it out!

For those of you with a passion for handmade, and you have a blog that is in need of a consistant weekly post to drive your traffic and help fellow artisans by doing the same. Come and join the BESTeam!

All items are clickable and will take you directly to Armcandyforyou's listings...

Buzzing

Sunday - Coffee and Cake
weekly mommy babble and handmade goings on...

Buzzing... Ok... Woo!... Boy have I been a busy bunny, and I wish that the busy activity was as soft and fuzzy as my hats but I'm probably more flopsy and fuzzy right now. I have only really just reflected on it all which is unusual for me as I'm normally very apt at taking in the days events when my children are in bed in the evenings. I have to give a big thankyou to the stupendous amounts of coffee I have devoured this week, for which I doubt I would be sitting her typing to you all if I'd have gone without lol... It's not just been work really but there have been some huuuuuuuuuge changes which mean that the big dynamics of next year are going to happen sooner like moving, then despite our initial confidence we are going to home school our son part-time whilst he attends mainstream school when he's 4 (long story), then there's been just a few personal things like me bringing in a new exercise routine to get out of my procrastinating rut ("i will excercise!!!... tomorrow!"... gets kinda old after months of putting it off LOL), trying to decide which photos to take along to my craft show (i can't use them all... darn it), making new hat designs and of course completing orders. I think I'm loving the fact that I've squeezed in new designs into my biggest achievement of the week as I am GUTTED that tonnes of ideas I had for Halloween totally fell through over the weeks. I had written them all out in a notepad and had planned a whole bunch of new headbands and a few hats to put up a couple of weeks ago but so far they are still just a few words on a piece of paper, so I am now thinking ahead to Christmas! I will be listing some of this weeks bits and bobs in the morning (it's the early hours on Sunday morning for me and I need sleep). Fingers crossed that I have a tonne more by next weekend, in addition to less limp muscles with all the exercise I'm going to get (ho hum!) and maybe if I'm really good I can avoid coffee for a while lol! And as for the kids, gosh I am actually relaxing a little more this week as my daughter is now actively playing without getting stroppy for slightly longer periods now, and to my son she is a whole new child lol! He is such a dear playing with her and trying to show her how to make her baby toys work, it's stretching my 20 minute break to myself to about 30 mins now... I say break yet I mean hands free... Hey if it means a hot cup of tea instead of lukewarm I'm game lol! I love that she can sit with him now on her own and dive into a pile of soft toys and actually giggle about it! It's amazing that this much time has passed already. I can still hear my bellowing echoing around the birth center the day I had her... ahhh memories. I could do it all again lol!

Right! Bed Time! I will be about in the morning folks! Take care :)

Elissanolan Encaustic Works

Friday Finds... Elissanolan

Interview # 48
I called out to Etsy sellers in the forums a few days ago to see if anyone would be interested in having interviews which is something I havent done in AGES. I normally stumble across people through finding them on my own accord. I thought it would be nice to ask for a change as I know so many of the newer or established sellers are actively searching for ways to promote their work. The first items that I fell in love with are the beautiful accessories from Etsy artist Elissa Nolan. Besides tile jewelry she offers artworks, bags and other jewelry accessories which in a collective look so feminine and bright on her shop homepage. I adore her product photos and I'm so pleased she responded to the interview call as I think she really has a wonderful talent and I'm excited to offer my readers an opportunity to learn more about her and her work :)

(Just click the images to go direct to the listings)

-- Tell me a bit about you! (Name, Age, Location, and give us a random fact whilst you're at it.) Hi! My name is Ellissa Nolan, I’ve just turned forty and I live in Brisbane in Australia. I have a six-year-old son and an amazing husband who supports every aspect of my creativity.

-- What is your business about then? Encaustic Works is about celebrating being an artist in every respect. I want to explore and make and create and scare myself by discovering things I can do that I never imagined possible before. I love to watch people’s reactions to my work and how they love to wear the pieces, or talk about the paintings, and find a bit more about their own subjective taste through this process.

-- How did Etsy come into your life? After moving to Queensland two years ago I started to create necklaces as a hobby to ‘de-stress’ after work. I wondered if people would be interested to buy them so I started to sell them at the Southbank Designer Markets in Brisbane. My friend suggested I also set up an online store on Etsy as an efficient way to handle payments for people that wanted to purchase them online. I got excited about that and set up an Etsy store. I didn’t really focus on putting work up there until May this year, and have slowly started to create a showcase of work. Now that is at a level I feel comfortable with I’m really interested in finding out more about the Etsy community.

-- Are you working a day job too? Yes, I work for QUT Creative Industries as a digital communications officer. I work on the social networks, Faculty website, create videos, take photographs and write news stories. I’ve just finished working with a great team to develop a new mobile website too.

-- How long has the artist in you been 'unleashed' for? I worked in Australian media and communications for a long time as my profession after leaving school at 16. When I was 25 I developed blood clots in my legs and lungs and had to take anti-coagulants for a year after that. During the aftermath I really had to assess what would make me happy as an individual before my inevitable permanent demise. So I thought if I could play classical guitar on a mountain in Spain by myself then that would be a life achievement that I would be content with. But at the time I didn’t know how to play guitar at all! So in around 1999 my friend kindly offered to help me start learning - I then hired a teacher and studied two hours a day for two years. I travelled to Spain and walked across the old Pilgrims trail to Santiago de Compostela. After developing tendonitis in my ankle I bought a guitar in Burgos and found a place to rest for a few days called Villafranca del Bierzo. I climbed to the top of a hill there, overlooking a vineyard and sat under a pear tree and played every Spanish piece I knew by heart. I knew my dream had been realized in that moment.

After that I had the confidence to enrol in University and do a Visual Arts degree. I started when I was four months pregnant. After completing two years of a Bachelors degree the Head of School invited me to undertake a Masters degree in Visual Arts. So I ended up managing a Summer School attracting over 500 people to create their own art in 8 days in the city of Launceston in Tasmania (Tasmanian Creative Arts Summer School). After doing that successfully I was awarded my Masters degree in Contemporary Art and moved to sunny Queensland for new challenges!

-- What has been the inspiration behind your business? During my undergraduate degree I found that my favorite work was creating encaustic abstract paintings. I would love that I could create visual stories with melted beeswax that didn’t have to replicate realism and they could communicate how I was feeling through textures and colours, format and by embedding objects. The business name is derived from that. The work is created by a desire to find and express my own interpretation of a ‘beautiful aesthetic’.

-- If you could describe your products in three words, what would you tell me? Colour, texture, emotion

-- What would an average working day for you be like from dawn til dusk? My usual day starts at around 5.30am. Either my husband or I make each other breakfast in bed with a really strong cup of coffee. I’ll check all of my messages on my phone and check out what’s happening with my friends on facebook. I read the news online on the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation). I’ll have a shower, get my son ready for school and drop him off. I then go into my office with another big cup of coffee and work on either writing stories, editing photos, concetualising projects, meeting people, writing emails, briefing agencies, editing videos or finding out interesting contemporary developments in the creative economy to share on our social networks. At lunchtime I go to the gym to try and keep healthy. During exercise I visualize which direction to take my projects and stay determined to be a productive creative person in society.

After work I pick up my son, head home for working on homework, bath time, dinner and family time. After dinner I’ll usually spend an hour or so working on my own creative projects. On the weekends I dedicate my time to my family and making my own creative work.

-- What's your favourite material and techniques to work with? At the moment I’m exploring using fabric to make bags, and also working with glass and resin. They are all new materials to me since graduating so I am enjoying the discovery of each one. However, at the end of the day I’ll always be drawn back to the desire to paint.

-- What is your ideal vision for the future for you and your work? I’m happy to create and to keep creating as long as I can, in as many ways as possible. I’m having a very fortunate time in that many of my dreams have been, and are being realized. To be able to continue to learn, grow and share creativity with likeminded people keeps me inspired!

-- Away from work, what do you like to do for fun or to wind down? Well I still like to play my guitar to really wind down. When I play it’s one of the few times that I feel my communication is uninhibited by the limits of language and words. There are sounds that match my feelings that I can’t explain in words. I’m certainly no virtuoso, but enjoy playing simple pieces as well as I can.

I also love to go to the beach with my husband and son. I find the sound of the ocean relaxing and the warm sun on my back makes me feel happy.

-- What are you likely to search for on Etsy? I’m likely to look for gifts for friends and family for birthdays and Christmas. At the moment I’m looking for paintings that I like too. The majority of my suppliers are people I have found on Etsy.

-- Any last words? Thank you for the opportunity to talk with you! Life is short – live your dream!

Remember to add your blog to the linky and not just in the comments (although comments are appreciated)! This hop is growing by the week so thanks to those of you who have grabbed my blog hop button or the ones that have put the linky code on their own pages! The more you all share this linky, the more opportunities people have to find and follow your blogs! Lets keep this up! I follow everyone that lists so to maximise everyone's chance of gaining followers try and follow as many as you can give time for :)

moonangelnay thursday blogspot link party blog hop

Grab This Button!

Here is how you can take part!
  1. Follow my blog!
  2. ADD YOUR LINK TO THE LINKY BELOW
  3. NO ETSY OR OTHER SHOP LINKS! This is a BLOG hop. Please contact me if you are interested in taking part in other features, but this is exclusively for blogs :)
  4. EITHER copy and paste the Linky code at the bottom of this post into YOUR OWN blog post OR Write a blog post including the Thursday Blog Hop button above (it's size will be 125px) OR Link to me using the Blog hop button somewhere on your blog.
  5. (not mandatory but it helps) I know not everyone can, but if you have social networks like Twitter, Facebook etc send a message out about this hop to help spread the word about all the fab blogs people can follow!
  6. Follow at least 2 or 3 others on the list and send them a blog comment to let them know! That way they can follow you back also :)
If I feel your entry doesn't seem fit for my blog (ie: adult related, gambling or something else distasteful or spammy) I will remove your link.

So submit your blog into the linky tool by clicking on the submit text and you're on your way :) This tool will expire on Sunday night and is accessible using the top navigation of my blog! Happy hopping!
